The live hip-hop band Heiruspecs – one of the most successful bands to come out of St. Paul Central High School – has joined forces with the Saint Central High School Foundation to create a scholarship fund at the school. Heiruspecs will stage a benefit on behalf of this important new fund at the St. Paul Central auditorium at 7pm on Thursday February 25.
Saint PaulCentralHigh School has graduated a lot of great groups and individuals since they first opened in 1866. The arts have also been revered and celebrated at Central, a rarity in this day for an urban public high school. This commitment to arts education has helped make Central a fertile breeding ground for some of Minnesota’s finest artists. Central arts programs have helped launched the careers of some of the finest names in music including Mint Condition, The Abstract Pack, Mayda Miller and many others. The live hip-hop group Heiruspecs is honored to be a part of this great tradition. In the hopes of continuing and fortifying this great tradition Heiruspecs is hosting a concert to raise funds for an annual college scholarship they are launching in partnership with the St. Paul Central Foundation. The first awards will be presented at the Scholarship awards ceremony in the Spring of 2010 at St. Paul Central.
On Thursday February 25 St. Paul Central will open its auditorium to a large-scale concert by Heiruspecs and their extended family. We are calling on all of our friends and collaborators to help us make this the biggest event in Heiruspecs’s twelve-year history. The group started in 1997 in the basement of St. Paul Central where Chris ‘Felix’ Wilbourn and Sean ‘Twinkie Jiggles’ McPherson met up with Red Freeberg’s advanced recording program. Soon Heiruspecs was a group full of horns, drums, emcees and youthful energy-sharing members from the more traditional band program upstairs and was making connections with Jan Mandell’s Touring Theater Program as well. After class and on the weekends Heiruspecs was filling Central’s Black Box Theater and networking with the larger Minnesota music scene. A few short years after Heiruspecs’ time at Central they were a national touring entity signed to a Sony/BMG subsidiary and sharing stages with Ja Rule, Cake, Lyrics Born, the White Stripes and many others. During this time Heiruspecs also cemented into a permanent group of six, all of whom are proud former students of St. PaulCentralHigh School. The scholarship concert will feature many guests from their long history, strongly leaning on their fellow St. Paul Central alums to help make the event special. An announcement of featured guests and opening acts will be released in early January.
Heiruspecs is pleased to be partnering with the Saint Paul Central High School Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, which will function as the fiscal agent for this scholarship effort. As stated in their materials, one of the Foundation’s is to provide financial assistance to recent graduates pursuing post-secondary education. The Heiruspecs scholarships will focus on students with demonstrated artistic interests. Donations may be made online at centralhighschoolfoundation.org. Please write “Heiruspecs Scholarship” in the “designate my donation” field. 100% of the profits from the ticket sales will also be donated to the Saint Paul Central High School Foundation. Heiruspecs and the Saint Paul Central High School Foundation will announce the amount raised for the scholarships after their fundraising campaign is completed in early March.

“The Beatles are in Big Trouble”
Thursday, October 1
Turf Club
9pm :: $5 :: 21+
A musical tribute to the Fab Four by Big Trouble with David Campbell, Brian Just, Chris Pavlich, and Aaron Schimdt with dVRG.
Beatles Rock Band competition with prizes presented by GameCrazy.
Giant Sgt. Pepper’s album cover cutout for pictures.
Beatles movies all night.
DJs Jim McGuinn and Jill Riley from 89.3 the Current spinning Beatles.
It all started with the dream of playing the giant medley that closes out Abbey Road and the Beatles’ career. For Big Trouble, an instrumental band of players with arms’ length resumes in other bands (Heiruspecs, Kid Dakota, Brutal Becomings, Supreme Privacy, Jessy Greene, Crossing Guards, Aaron & The Sea, Traditional Methods, and many more), they knew the perfect singer to carry that weight: David Campbell, DJ on 89.3 the Current and be-wigged member of E.L.nO. In the past, they’d teamed up to cover everyone from Sonny & Cher (with the help of Lucy Michelle) to The Outfield to Weezer, and the re-release of the entire Beatles’ catalog provided the perfect occasion to do something giant and over-the-top.
So Campbell recruited more singers to help him make it better: Chris Pavlich from indie rockers Two Harbors, Aaron Schmidt from holding a cold Budweiser in Ashtray Hearts, and Brian Just courtesy of his bad, singer-songwriting self. Big Trouble got by with a little help from one of its friends in the form of dVRG, keyboardist from Heiruspecs, and the supergroup was set. A long and winding setlist was handcrafted and the musical tribute to the Beatles was ready. But that wasn’t nearly enough.
When “The Beatles are in Big Trouble” goes down on Thursday, October 1 at the Turf Club, there’ll be more. GameCrazy will be setting up the new Beatles Rock Band game for competition in the Clown Lounge (with prizes). Matt Scharenbroich (The Plastic Constellations) is hard at work painting a giant 8’ x 8’ mock-up of theSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band cover (with cutouts for heads, naturally) for people to take their picture with. Paul Creager from Square Lake Music & Film Festival is helping out with video so we can show Beatles movies all night long. And DJs Jim McGuinn and Jill Riley from 89.3 the Current will be spinning Beatles and Beatles-related songs all night.
We hope you will enjoy the show.

NO FIGHTS AT HEIRUSPECS SHOWS! You’re all on notice.
Other than an unfortunate incident, this was a rediculoid show and we all sweated it out together. Good times. To the girl who grabbed my ass a few times; thanks! I wasn’t sure it was still there.
BIG QUARTERS PRESIDING;

Everybody get low!
I’ll say it again, it was an oven in there last night. So I appreciate all of the folks, especially at the front, for sticking with it the whole night!
We took the stage around midnight…

THAT JUST HAPPENED.

In other news, Big ups to New MC for using the Heiruspecs instrumentals in his solo set. I caught him at the Nomad the other night and it was awesome. Just to plug a long time friend of Heiruspecs, he can be found on
First and foremost, we are playing GRAND OLD DAY street festival in St. Paul this Sunday (6/7) at NOON. Its very important that I stress that we are playing at NOON. We’ll be on the Salut stage which is at 917 Grand Ave St Paul, MN 55105. True story. Full info to be found here –
Friday 6/4, Felix hosts GET CRYPHY in 1st Avenue’s VIP room with Jimmy 2 Times. Last time Heiruspecs played the Triple Rock, Jimmy 2 Times held down the turntables all night and Friday shall be even more rediculoid. With original mixes of classic rap and dance tracks, this should be awesome. More info and a taste of the music can be found here –
In the main room at 1st Ave on 6/4, our friend Maria Isa is having her CD release party. Congrats! If you want to go check it out please do. Maria Isa, Muja Messiah, Mayda, Danceband, Kill the Vultures, I Self Divine, and St. Paul Slim will be joining her on stage as well. If you’ve seen us in the Twin Cities or nearby within the last year, you’ve seen every single one of those acts at least once. Go check it out!
